Federal Election - How do candidates stand on Palestine?

Published April 29, 2025

This week we're voting for a new federal government in so-called australia.

For those of us that have the right to vote, it's important to keep Palestine in mind when we do so.

To make that easier for you, we reached out to the candidates for Lutruwita/Tasmania and asked them about their stance on Palestine.

What did we ask?

1. Australia’s obligations under international law

  • A. Do you support Australia honouring its obligations under international law, as a signatory to the Geneva Conventions — which outlines the requirement for third party states to conflicts, such as Australia — to actively take measures to prevent any contribution to war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide?
  • B. Will you commit to enforcing the warrants issued by the International Criminal Court — as Australia is a signatory to the Rome Statute — for the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant for their roles in the commission of war crimes in Palestine?
  • C. Will you call for the implementation of sanctions against Israel, Israeli individuals and entities? (Refer to the aforementioned list from the ACIJ of sanctions that could be applied)
  • D. Will you call for the investigation into potential war crimes committed by Australian nationals who have served in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), and their prosecution under Australian law?
  • E. If elected, do you commit to progressing legislation and/or policy to ensure Australia is not complicit in any breaches of international law committed by foreign states, whether they are an ally or not?

2. Anti-Palestinian Bias in Australia

  • A. Will you publicly denounce anti-Palestinian bias in Australian institutions, including media, university and arts institutions?
  • B. Will you commit to uphold the values of independence in our artistic industries and condemn the silencing of Arab, Palestinian and Muslim artists and their allies?

3. Visas

  • A. Do you support increasing the ability of Palestinians fleeing war crimes to come to Australia immediately (regardless of family connection), in line with Australia’s offering to refugees of previous conflicts, such as in Ukraine and Afghanistan?
  • B. Will you commit to increasing the availability of visa subclasses enabling Palestinian refugees to migrate to Australia, including the capacity to work and receive Government assistance?
